In small to medium size companies and most professional services firms, it is rare for a leader to be properly trained for the leadership role.  These people are normally elevated to leadership positions because they are so good at what they do in their core business.

In education, a great teacher is not necessarily a great school principal.

In sports, a great athlete is not necessarily a great team manager or coach.

I use leadership assessment instruments to evaluate leadership behaviors and identify those areas for focus in order to unleash the capabilities of the leader.  This is, in virtually all consulting work, the first step in providing leaders the training and coaching they need to be most effective in their roles as leaders.

These assessments instruments measure personality behaviors, personality practices, critical thinking and emotional intelligence.

The attached is a summary of results for a typical leader in professional services.
